MILWAUKEE (AP) -- George Hill hit a 10-foot jumper with 2.3 seconds remaining to hold off a Rice comeback and help IUPUI beat the Owls 58-56 Saturday in the Pepsi Blue & Gold Classic consolation game.

Hill led the Jaguars (1-1) with 16 points and Angelo Smith added 14 points and 13 rebounds. IUPUI bounced back from a 73-50 loss to Winthrop in the tournament opener Friday.

Morris Almond led Rice (0-2) with 21 points, including two 3-pointers in the final two minutes, while J.R. Harrison added 9 points and 9 rebounds.

Both teams struggled from the field in the second half, with Rice scoring just two points in the first nine minutes of the second half and only 7 points during the first 15 minutes. IUPUI actually shot worse in the second half, hitting just 8 off 29 shots.

The Jaguars used a 14-5 run in the second half to grab a 48-38 lead with 5:43 remaining when Hill hit one of two free throws. Jamaal Moore's steal and lay-up with 2:25 remaining cut the lead to 53-49. Almond then hit a 3-pointer with 1:45 remaining to cut the lead to 53-52.

Almonds second 3-pointer gave Rice a 55-53 lead with 1:06 remaining, its first lead since midway through the first half. David Barlow then a hit 3-pointer with 44 seconds remaining to give the Jaguars back the lead at 56-55.

Rice's Cory Pflieger was fouled on a rebound with 20.3 seconds remaining and hit one of two free throws to tie the game at 56.

After a timeout, Hill drove the lane and hit a jumper. Pflieger's 3-pointer at the buzzer missed to give the Jaguars the win.
