IUPUI 58, Rice 56

MILWAUKEE (AP) -- George Hill hit a 10-foot jumper with 2.3
seconds remaining to hold off a Rice comeback and help IUPUI beat
the Owls 58-56 Saturday in the Pepsi Blue & Gold Classic
consolation game.

Hill led the Jaguars (1-1) with 16 points and Angelo Smith added
14 points and 13 rebounds. IUPUI bounced back from a 73-50 loss to
Winthrop in the tournament opener Friday.

Morris Almond led Rice (0-2) with 21 points, including two
3-pointers in the final two minutes, while J.R. Harrison added 9
points and 9 rebounds.

Marquette was to play Winthrop later Saturday in the tournament
championship game.

Both teams struggled from the field in the second half, with
Rice scoring just two points in the first nine minutes of the
second half and only 7 points during the first 15 minutes. IUPUI
actually shot worse in the second half, hitting just 8 off 29

The Jaguars used a 14-5 run in the second half to grab a 48-38
lead with 5:43 remaining when Hill hit one of two free throws.
Jamaal Moore's steal and lay-up with 2:25 remaining cut the lead to
53-49. Almond then hit a 3-pointer with 1:45 remaining to cut the
lead to 53-52.

Almonds second 3-pointer gave Rice a 55-53 lead with 1:06
remaining, its first lead since midway through the first half.
David Barlow then a hit 3-pointer with 44 seconds remaining to give
the Jaguars back the lead at 56-55.

Rice's Cory Pflieger was fouled on a rebound with 20.3 seconds
remaining and hit one of two free throws to tie the game at 56.

After a timeout, Hill drove the lane and hit a jumper.
Pflieger's 3-pointer at the buzzer missed to give the Jaguars the

IUPUI went on a 15-5 run late in the first half to grab a 34-28
lead on two free throws by Maushae Byles with 1:39 remaining.

Almond hit a 3-pointer at the halftime buzzer to cut the lead to
34-31. There were 13 lead changes in the first half.
