ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) -- Tyler Azzarelli scored 22 points and
Dejan Delic added 19 as Monmouth defeated Southern Illinois 80-68
Thursday in the quarterfinals of the Carrs/Safeway Great Alaska
Monmouth (1-1) broke open a close game midway through the second
half with an 11-0 run behind six points by Chris Kenny and three
points and an assist by Delic, as the Hawks took the lead 51-40
with 12:27 remaining.
The Salukis (1-1) closed to 61-58 when Jamaal Tatum hit a
12-foot jumper with 4:27 remaining.
But Kenny and Azzarelli answered with 3-pointers and the Hawks
hit 13-of-14 free throws in the final 2:30 to hold off Southern
Tatum led the Salukis with 20 points and five assists. Tony
Young added 13 and Mike Dale scored 12.
Kenny and Marques Alston scored 13 apiece for Monmouth. Whitney
Young had seven rebounds. The Hawks shot 54 percent from the field.
Monmouth faces South Carolina on Friday in the semifinals.
Southern Illinois faces Alaska-Anchorage in the consolation
