HOUSTON (AP) -- J.R. Harrison scored 27 points and Lorenzo
Williams had 23, and Rice survived missing several key free throws
to beat Utah 96-94 in triple overtime Saturday.
Morris Almond added 20 points for Rice, which missed eight foul
shots in the last 20 seconds of regulation and each overtime.
The last three came in the third overtime.
Bryant Markson's dunk
with four seconds left got Utah within two, and the Owls missed two
free throws after a foul. But
Tim Drisdom missed a 3-pointer to end
the game.
Rice (3-3) was 9-of-18 from the foul line in overtime but held
Utah (4-1) to just 36 percent shooting from the field in the three
extra periods.
Markson and
Jonas Langvad led Utah (4-1) with 19 points and
Johnnie Bryant had 15, including a layup with 10 seconds left in
the first overtime that forced another extra period. Utah's Luke
Nevill forced a third extra period when he tipped in Markson's
missed layup, tying the game at 90.
Patrick Britton scored 11 points for Rice, which won despite
being outrebounded 60-34. The Owls went to the foul line 47 times,
making 68 percent.
Shaun Green scored 14 points and
Chris Jackson had 10 for Utah.
