TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (AP) -- Alabama got the win, but Winthrop got the Crimson Tide's respect.

Chuck Davis scored 22 points to lead Alabama (No. 18 ESPN/USA Today; No. 21 AP) to a tough 60-57 victory over Winthrop on Saturday night.

"I think we beat a top 25-caliber team," Crimson Tide coach Mark Gottfried said.

Winthrop coach Gregg Marshall believes his team is capable of beating a Top 25 team.

"I told the guys, we proved we can go on the road against a top 25 team -- top 11 preseason -- and be right there and have a great shot to win in those situations. But we didn't pull it out," Marshall said.

Winthrop led by four points midway through the second half, but key dunks by Evan Brock and Jermareo Davidson and a pair of 3-pointers by Justin Jonus and Ronald Steele pushed the momentum in Alabama's favor.

"We were waiting on them to shoot 3s and they were getting wide open shots. They came out and pressured us," Davidson said.

Alabama led 33-31 at the half. Torrell Martin and Chris Gaynor hit 3-pointers to give the Eagles a 41-39 second-half lead. The Tide answered with a 10-6 run, and Davidson's dunk with 9:55 left gave Alabama (4-1) a 49-47 advantage.

The Eagles never overcame the lead after that -- but they got close.

Alabama held its largest second-half lead at 58-51 with 2:15 left before Winthrop rallied behind a 6-0 run, fueled by back-to-back 3s by James Shuler and Martin and closed within a point at 58-57.

Davis extended the margin with two free throws, helping to seal the win for Alabama.

Martin scored 24 points on 9-for-15 shooting, including 3-for-8 from 3-point range for the Eagles (4-1). Shuler added 10 points.

"You know this game hurt a lot. ... We really went after it on defense in the end," Martin said.

Davis, who scored 14 points in the first half, shot 8-for-13 from the field and 4-for-7 from the line. Davidson finished with 12 points and nine rebounds.

The Tide was slowed by 10 first-half turnovers, while Winthrop had only three.

The Tide dominated the boards, outrebounding Winthrop 32-24.
