PHILADELPHIA (AP) -- Steven Smith scored 26 points and grabbed a career high 15 rebounds in leading La Salle to a 62-50 victory over local rival Drexel in the first game of a Palestra doubleheader Saturday.

Jermaine Thomas and Mike St. John each had nine points for La Salle (4-0), off to its best start since the 1994-95 season.

Frank Elegar had 18 points and 13 rebounds for Drexel (3-5), which suffered its fifth straight loss.

La Salle led 38-31 two minutes into the second half, but the Dragons rallied behind Elegar and closed to 42-41 on a layup by Dominick Mejia. La Salle then moved out to a 53-47 advantage at the 3:51 mark and after Vashir Mason scored for Drexel, Smith scored five straight points to seal the victory.

The teams were tied 25-25 with 8:26 left in the first half, but Drexel then scored just one field goal while the Explorers went on a 10-2 run to lead 35-27 at halftime.
