PHILADELPHIA (AP) -- Steven Smith scored 26 points and grabbed a
career high 15 rebounds in leading La Salle to a 62-50 victory over
local rival Drexel in the first game of a Palestra doubleheader
Frank Elegar had 18 points and 13 rebounds for Drexel (3-5),
which suffered its fifth straight loss.
La Salle led 38-31 two minutes into the second half, but the
Dragons rallied behind Elegar and closed to 42-41 on a layup by
Dominick Mejia. La Salle then moved out to a 53-47 advantage at the
3:51 mark and after Vashir Mason scored for Drexel, Smith scored
five straight points to seal the victory.
The teams were tied 25-25 with 8:26 left in the first half, but
Drexel then scored just one field goal while the Explorers went on
a 10-2 run to lead 35-27 at halftime.
