PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) -- Pooh Jeter hit 9 of 13 shots and scored 28 points to lead Portland to a 99-95 nonconference victory over Long Beach State on Saturday.

Portland had five players in double figures, including Darren Cooper with 19, as the Pilots hit 61 percent of their shots. Shawn Hawkins led Long Beach with 19 points, including a 4-for-5 effort from the 3-point line.

The 49ers, who also got 17 from Jibril Hodges, led the high-scoring game 46-42 at halftime. The visitors then added another 49 points in the second half, but it wasn't enough as the Pilots answered with a 57-point second half to claim the victory.

The Pilots trailed 72-64 with 10 minutes left in the game, but a 14-2 run, capped by a layup by Jeter, put the Pilots in front 76-74. After taking the lead, Portland tacked on another seven unanswered points, a run that ended with a jumper by Jeter.

Long Beach kept the game interesting down the stretch, cutting Portland's lead to 88-87 when Hodges hit a 3-pointer with 2:52 left.

Portland pushed its lead to 96-89 on a pair of free throws by Ben Sullivan with 30 seconds left, but Long Beach still wasn't done. A 3-pointer by Sterling Byrd cut the deficit to 97-95 with six seconds to play. Jeter then finished off the scoring with two free throws.
