NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. (AP) -- Ricky Soliver scored 19 points and
Iona continued its best start since 1984-85 by routing Rider 80-59
on Wednesday night in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference opener
for both teams.
Iona (6-0) used a 25-2 run to take a 63-38 lead midway through
the second half. The Gaels began 7-0 in 1984-85 en route to an NCAA
berth and a 26-5 record.
Steve Burtt scored seven of his 13 points during the decisive
spree, including a layup that created his team's largest lead,
63-38 with 9:47 left. Rider (2-4) scored its only points during
that stretch on two free throws by Terrance Mouton after a
technical foul was called on Iona's Marvin McCullough for shoving.
Karil Wachsmann had 13 points and McCullough added 10.
Mouton had 14 points for the Broncs, who enjoyed their biggest
lead at 17-9 on Rodney Pierce's two foul shots at 11:31 of the
opening half. Iona rallied for a 36-31 halftime lead.
The Gaels outrebounded Rider 38-29 and also owned an advantage
at the foul line, where they coverted 20 of 27 to a 14-of-22 effort
