BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) -- Wen Muckubu scored 15 points and Frank
Holmes had 13 points and 14 rebounds to lead UAB to an 81-59
victory over Alcorn State Saturday night.
Holmes, a 6-9 sophomore forward, had his first double-double and
a career high for rebounds. Richard Jones scored 14 points off the
bench for UAB (4-2), while Marvette McDonald and Carldell
"Squeaky" Johnson added 10 for the Blazers.
Cliff Douglass scored 22 points to lead Alcorn State (0-6) amd
Almaad Jackson had 13 points for the Braves.
The game was closer than the final score indicated. It was tied
15-15 with 7:52 left in the first half, but UAB closed the half
with a 20-4 run to take a 35-19 lead at intermission. The Braves
went almost 10 minutes without a field goal in the first period.
The Braves warmed up in the second half. Douglass hit four
3-pointers early in the second half to help close the margin to
49-44 with 9:35 left.
McDonald hit three 3-pointers to help UAB pull away. The final
score was the Blazers biggest margin of the game.
