DETROIT (AP) -- Brandon Cotton made two free throws with 3.3 seconds left to give Detroit a 69-68 victory over Canisius on Saturday.

Cotton had missed a game-tying free throw with 28.3 seconds left but got another chance after a Canisius turnover. His free throws gave the Titans (5-5) their first lead of the game.

Canisius, which led from the opening seconds, fell to 1-6.

Cotton led all scorers with 24 points, while Chuck Bailey added 14 for the Titans and Zach Everingham scored 11.

Kevin Downey led the Golden Griffins with 18, and Chuck Harris had 16.

Canisius jumped out to a 9-0 lead and still led 40-34 at halftime. Darnell Wilson, playing in his hometown, had 11 in the first half for the Golden Griffins, while Cotton had 10 for the Titans.

Canisius led by as many as 12 points early in the second half, but the Titans rallied late.

Cotton's jumper made it 68-65 with 3:04 left, but both teams turned over the ball on their next two possessions.

After a third straight turnover by Downey, Cotton scored on a fast-break layup and was fouled. Cotton missed the free throw, but the Golden Griffins were called for over-and-back while trying to avoid Detroit's attempts to foul.

Cotton was then fouled by Corey Herring as he drove to the basket. After Cotton's free throws, Downey missed a desperation 3-pointer at the buzzer.

As has become typical in Detroit sporting events this month, one of the 1,886 fans at Calihan Hall had a "Fire Millen" sign, referring to Lions president Matt Millen.
