SAN DIEGO (AP) -- Kyle Spain had 16 points and nine rebounds to
lead San Diego State past Maryland-Baltimore County 58-45 Tuesday
Reserve John Sharper scored all 12 of his points in the first
half on four 3-pointers as the Aztecs (6-4) built a 36-17 halftime
lead, their largest halftime advantage in over two years.
The Retrievers (4-5) have lost nine straight on the road,
including four times this season, and were held to a season low in
UMBC's Jerrel Dinkins scored 17 points and John Zito added 12.
Sharper connected on his first two 3-point attempts and Richie
Williams followed with another to help the Aztecs pull away to a
17-7 lead with 11:39 left in the first half.
The Aztecs scored the last six points of the half while UMBC
went scoreless over the final 3:50.
The Retrievers shot just 27.6 percent from the field in the
first half and finished at 31.7 percent.
San Diego State shot 45.5 percent from the field, but had 24
turnovers. The Aztecs' Mohamed Camara had a game-high 10 rebounds.
The Retrievers mounted a 12-1 run, including six points by
Dinkins, to pull within 45-34 with 8:56 left, but they could come
San Diego State played its first game this season without
forward Marcus Slaughter, their leading scorer and rebounder, who
was sidelined with a sprained left knee.
