FARMVILLE, Va. (AP) -- Ron Howard scored 20 points and Dan
Oppland 19 as Valparaiso beat the Lancers 82-79 Tuesday night.
The Crusaders (5-3) managed to hold onto their lead despite
being outscored 43-37 after halftime.
Howard scored seven of the first nine for Valparaiso as the
Crusaders jumped ahead by five. Longwood (2-9) brought it to within
three at 12:18, but Valparaiso answered with a 13-3 run that put
the Crusaders up 35-22 with 7:15 to go before the break. Valparaiso
led 45-36 at halftime.
The Lancers quickly brought it to within one at the 16:56 mark
and then took the lead off Maurice Sumter's two free throws. The
lead changed four more times, with Dana Smith's free through
putting Longwood up 53-52 with 13:22 remaining. Smith scored seven
of the next nine for Longwood to put the Lancers up by eight with
10:54 to go. Valparaiso fought back, taking the lead 67-66 off
Mohamed Kone's layup with 6:53 remaining. Longwood tied it two more
times before Al Berdiel's two free throws gave the Crusaders the
lead for good with 3:16 left.
Neither team had a field goal in the last 3:39.
Clayton Morgan had a career-high 25 points and 13 rebounds for
Longwood. Sumter also had 25 points, and Smith added 11.
Seth Colclasure had 14 for Valparaiso.
