OMAHA, Neb. (AP) -- Anthony Tolliver scored 14 points and Johnny
Mathies added 13 to lead Creighton to a 63-47 win over Norfolk
State on Wednesday night.
Norfolk State (2-8) was led by Tony Murphy with 18 points, but
none of his teammates managed more than 7 points.
The road-weary Spartans, who have played one home game, couldn't
keep from fouling and Creighton used free throws to pull away in
the second half. The Bluejays led 36-30 before scoring 11 straight
points to lead by 17. The first 9 points on the decisive run came
on free throws and the final 2 on a long jumper by Tolliver.
It was still 37-30 when Al'Davon Thomas was called for a
blocking foul. He also was assessed a technical and Creighton made
all four free throws, two each by Mathies and Porter.
The Spartans didn't get closer than 14 the rest of the way.
The Bluejays, who have two starters and their top reserve
sidelined by injuries, led 28-21 at halftime. The lead could have
been bigger but Creighton went 4-for-11 on free throws and missed
several close-range shots.
Both teams shot poorly, Creighton making 36 percent and Norfolk
State 34 percent from the field. Norfolk State had a 43-39
