Four Pitt players hit double digits in scoring

PITTSBURGH (AP) -- Aaron Gray led four Pittsburgh players in double-digit scoring with 14 points to lead Pittsburgh to a 77-51 win over Coppin State Wednesday night.

Carl Krauser had 12 points, Levon Kendall 11 and Ronald Ramon 10 as the Panthers improved to 9-0 while the Eagles fell to 0-9. It is the fourth consecutive season Pitt has won its first nine games.

Darryl Roberts had 17 points for Coppin State, which will not play a home game until Jan. 14. The Eagles were playing their fourth consecutive game on the road against a ranked team. Pitt is No. 25 in the ESPN/USA Today coach's poll.

Coppin State is 1-30 all-time against ranked teams, with the lone victory coming, ironically, in Pittsburgh -- over No. 2 seed South Carolina in the first round of the 1997 NCAA Tournament.

Pitt, meanwhile, has not left the city of Pittsburgh for a game yet this season and has generally played lower-level competition.

As has been the case in many of their first nine games, however, the Panthers let Coppin State stay in the game deep into the second half.

The Panthers, who have held eight teams in a row to 60 points or less, began the game on a 10-2 run and added a 14-3 run late in the first half to take a 30-14 lead.

Though Pitt never trailed in the contest, the Eagles cut their deficit to seven as late as eight minutes into the second half.

Gray had nine of Pitt's first 14 points, but failed to have at least 10 rebounds for only the third time this season.
