MORAGA, Calif. (AP) -- DeAndre Haynes scored 20 of his career-high 31 points in the second half to rally Kent State (6-3) from an eight-point halftime deficit to beat NAIA school Concordia 88-76 in the Shamrock Shootout at Saint Mary's College on Wednesday night.

The Golden Flashes from the Mid America Conference built an early nine-point lead before Concordia (7-4) outscored them 31-14 over the final 11:45 of the first half to take a 46-38 halftime lead.

But Haynes and Jay Youngblood proved too quick on the offensive end in the second half as Concordia, which played the previous night at home in Irvine began to wear down.

Kent State play Saint Mary's on Thursday night in the second game of the tournament, while Concordia will face Mississippi Valley State. The Gaels beat Mississippi Valley State 78-48. The matchups were set in advance.

Youngblood, who finished with 19, scored Kent State's first three baskets of the second half.

Concordia maintained a lead until Mike Scott's rebound put Kent State ahead 65-64 with 9:25 to play. But Concordia immediately regained the lead on Nate Klitzing's lay-up. Klitzing followed with a 3-pointer to build the lead to 69-65.

Scott again gave Kent State a short-lived 72-71 lead with a free three with 5:03 to play, but Levi Luster sank two free throws for Concordia to grab the lead back.

Haynes scored on drives on Kent State's next two possessions, and Armon Gates, who finished with 13 points, hit a pair of 3-pointers as the Golden Flashes pulled away.

Joe Roberson led Concordia with 14 points. Rocky Soliday and Adam Greenaway had 13 apiece and Klitzing had 10. Luster had a game-high nine rebounds as Concordia outrebounded Kent State 33-31.

Concordia, which hit 57.7 percent from the field in the first half, hit only 11 of 29 shots (37.9 percent) in the second half and had 25 turnovers. Kent State, which had 17 turnovers, had only four in the second half when it shot 67.7 percent (21-of-31).
