BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) -- Marvett McDonald scored 18 points and
had six assists and Cardell "Squeaky" Johnson followed with 16
points to lead UAB to a 85-57 victory over Old Dominion Thursday
UAB (6-3) got off to an early start, opening the game on a 14-0
run and shooting 63 percent from the floor in the first half.
The 28-point loss was Old Dominion's worst setback in 211 games,
spanning to an 83-53 loss to George Mason on Jan. 4, 1999.
"I thought, for the most part, for 40 minutes we played some
very good basketball," UAB head coach Mike Anderson said. "It was
all predicated from our defense. Of course, we made shots. When you
make shots, it makes a big, big difference -- and we rebounded
Old Dominion (7-4) battled back and cut the game to five at
15-10 with 11:46 left in the first, but that would be the closest
the Monarchs would get in the game.
The Blazers led 48-22 at the half and were up by as many as 39
points at 77-38 with 6:03 left to play.
