Leemire Goldwire added 15 points -- including nine in the final
3:08 -- as Charlotte (6-5) snapped a two-game losing streak. Rutgers
Quincy Douby led all scorers with 29, and had a chance to tie the
game at the end. But his off-balance 3-point attempt left his hand
just after the buzzer sounded and fell short.
After playing to a 40-40 tie through the first half, there were
11 lead changes in the second half before Charlotte took the lead
for good when Withers converted a three-point play to make it 79-76
with 1:04 left. Goldwire then went 6-for-6 from the free throw line
down the stretch, hitting his last two with 5.9 seconds left.
After a timeout, Anthony Farmer drove to the basket and then
kicked the ball back to Douby, but time expired just before he
could launch his shot.
The game was delayed for eight minutes in the first half, when
the power went out on the scoreboard and an embankment of lights
opposite the players' bench with 5:40 remaining. Play resumed when
the scoreboard went back on, and the lighting embankment came on
after 16 minutes.
