DENTON, Texas (AP) -- Oliver Lafayette scored 25 points and Ramon
Dyer added 23 as Houston pulled away in the final two minutes of a
92-84 victory against North Texas on Friday.
The Cougars (5-3) led 83-82 when Jahmar Thorpe made two free
throws and Lanny Smith followed with a 3-pointer to spark a 9-2
game-ending run. Houston held the Mean Green (4-4) without a field
goal over the final 3½ minutes.
Dyer, who led his team with eight rebounds, was 7-of-11 from the
field -- all on 3-pointers. Oliver was 10-of-21 shooting and had
Kendrick Davis led five North Texas players in double figures
with 20 points, 14 in the second half.
Dyer had 15 first-half points, all on 3-pointers, to help the
Cougars build a seven-point halftime lead, and the lead grew to 10
early in the second half before North Texas came back.
Smith, who had 11 points and a game-high four assists, ended any
realistic comeback hopes with his late 3-pointer, putting Houston
ahead 88-82 with 1:10 remaining.
