Creighton 78, Missouri State 56

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) -- Anthony Tolliver and Johnny Mathies scored 18
points each and Jeffrey Day pulled down 10 rebounds to lead
Creighton to a 78-56 win over Missouri State on Wednesday night.

The game was the Missouri Valley Conference season opener for
both teams.

The Bluejays (7-2, 1-0 MVC) also got 13 points from Dane Watts
and 10 from Nick Porter. Freshman guard Josh Dotzler had 9 points
and five assists.

Blake Ahearn led Missouri State (7-2, 0-1) with 13 points. Sky
Frazier added 11 and Kellen Easley had 10.

Missouri State averaged 89 points in its eight nonconference
games, winning by 21 points per game. But the Bears had difficulty
at both ends against the Bluejays.

Creighton used a 10-2 run to open the second half to lead 46-32.
The teams started trading baskets, but the Bluejays used 3-pointers
by Dominic Bishop, Watts, Porter and Mathies to go ahead 62-42 with
10:28 to play.

A 12-5 run got the Bears within 13, but they never cut the
deficit to single digits the rest of the way.

Creighton, trailing 9-8, went on a 9-0 run in a span of 1:53 and
led for the final 14 minutes of the first half, which ended 36-30.
Tolliver scored 8 straight points for Creighton and Porter ended
the half with a 3-pointer.

The Bluejays shot 48.1 percent (27-for-58) and made eight
3-pointers. The Bears shot 33 percent (20-58) and had two
3-pointers.

Creighton played without starters Nate Funk (shoulder) and
Pierce Hibma (knee), and key reserve Jimmy Motz (stress fracture).
Funk, a preseason choice for MVC player of the year, missed his
fifth straight game but may return next week.
