    CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (AP) -- Louis Ford's 3-pointer with nine seconds left lifted Howard past Mercer 78-74 Thursday in the first round of the Dr Pepper Classic.

    His basket made it 76-74, and Will Gant added two free throws with one second left for the final score.

    Howard (2-6) had five players in double figures and made 7-of-18 3-point attempts. Mercer (1-6) was just 1-of-11 behind the arc.

    Jason Trotter led the balanced scoring attack with 17 points for the Bison. Ford had 13, Darryl Hudson and Gant 12 each and Darek Mitchell 10.

    Andrew Brown led the Bears with 19 points, Jacob Skogen had 13 and Brian Pfohl 12, including 4-of-4 from the field and 4-of-4 from the line.

    Howard led at the half 46-39 after shooting 54.3 percent from the field. For the game, the Bison shot 50 percent. Mercer shot 51.8 percent despite being cold on 3-point shots.

    Mercer did not score in the last 1:24 after leading 74-71 on a layup by Skogen. Hudson made two free throws for the Bison with 58 seconds left to make it 74-73, setting up Ford's 3-pointer.
