CINCINNATI (AP) -- Brian Thornton scored 14 points and Xavier
overcame shooting a season-low 39 percent to defeat Southern 73-56
The Musketeers (7-2) made up for their poor performance from the
field by hitting 20 of 30 free throws and earning a 41-33
rebounding edge against the smaller Jaguars (1-9). Southern was
12-of-20 at the foul line.
Southern trailed just 50-45 with 12:15 to play but then went
scoreless for more than six minutes as Xavier scored 15 straight
points to put the game out of reach.
Xavier used a 14-0 run in the first half to take a 35-27 lead.
The Jaguars led by as many nine in the first half.
Chris Alexander had 16 points and Peter Cipriano added 10 for
Southern. Cincinnati native Deforrest Riley-Smith scored eight
points against his hometown team.
Riley-Smith originally signed with Penn State but transferred to
Xavier midway through his sophomore year. The junior never played
for the Musketeers and transferred again to Southern.
