Xavier 73, Southern 56

CINCINNATI (AP) -- Brian Thornton scored 14 points and Xavier
overcame shooting a season-low 39 percent to defeat Southern 73-56
Thursday night.

The Musketeers (7-2) made up for their poor performance from the
field by hitting 20 of 30 free throws and earning a 41-33
rebounding edge against the smaller Jaguars (1-9). Southern was
12-of-20 at the foul line.

Southern trailed just 50-45 with 12:15 to play but then went
scoreless for more than six minutes as Xavier scored 15 straight
points to put the game out of reach.

Xavier used a 14-0 run in the first half to take a 35-27 lead.
The Jaguars led by as many nine in the first half.

Stanley Burrell added 11 points, and Josh Duncan and Justin Cage
each had 10 for Xavier. Justin Doellman had eight points and nine

Chris Alexander had 16 points and Peter Cipriano added 10 for
Southern. Cincinnati native Deforrest Riley-Smith scored eight
points against his hometown team.

Riley-Smith originally signed with Penn State but transferred to
Xavier midway through his sophomore year. The junior never played
for the Musketeers and transferred again to Southern.
