Seton Hall 73, Iona 59

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) -- Kelly Whitney scored 22 points and
Donald Copeland added 17 points and six assists to lead Seton Hall
to a 73-59 victory over Iona on Saturday.

Seton Hall (8-3) began the game with a 9-2 run keyed by two
3-pointers by Jamar Nutter. He scored six points and Copeland added
five in the Pirates' game-opening 20-5 spurt. Brian Laing hit a
fadeaway jumper for a 24-7 lead with 9:20 left in the first half.

The Gaels (7-2) closed within 29-18 on Ricky Soliver's 3-pointer
with 4:44 to go in the half. Seton Hall, however, maintained at
least a double-digit lead for the rest of the half, and was up
38-24 on two free throws by Copeland with 10 seconds left in the

Iona's first-half frustration was typified by its final
possession, in which Soliver dribbled around the perimeter under
heavy pressure and didn't get a shot off before time expired.

Seton Hall extended the lead to 50-34 on Copeland's 3-pointer
from the left wing with 14:21 left. That basket was part of an 11-2
run that put the Pirates ahead 56-36 with 11:02 left. Iona didn't
get closer than the final score.

Grant Billmeier had 11 points for the Pirates.

Steve Burtt Jr. scored 18 points and Soliver added 17 the Gaels,
who other loss was to No. 18 Kentucky. Burtt, who was guarded much
of the time by Seton Hall forward Stan Gaines, shot 7-for-20 from
the field.
