Seton Hall (8-3) began the game with a 9-2 run keyed by two
3-pointers by Jamar Nutter. He scored six points and Copeland added
five in the Pirates' game-opening 20-5 spurt. Brian Laing hit a
fadeaway jumper for a 24-7 lead with 9:20 left in the first half.
The Gaels (7-2) closed within 29-18 on Ricky Soliver's 3-pointer
with 4:44 to go in the half. Seton Hall, however, maintained at
least a double-digit lead for the rest of the half, and was up
38-24 on two free throws by Copeland with 10 seconds left in the
Iona's first-half frustration was typified by its final
possession, in which Soliver dribbled around the perimeter under
heavy pressure and didn't get a shot off before time expired.
Seton Hall extended the lead to 50-34 on Copeland's 3-pointer
from the left wing with 14:21 left. That basket was part of an 11-2
run that put the Pirates ahead 56-36 with 11:02 left. Iona didn't
get closer than the final score.
Grant Billmeier had 11 points for the Pirates.
