YPSILANTI, Mich. (AP) -- Jay Youngblood scored 23 points and Omni Smith added 12 to power Kent State to a 74-64 victory over slumping Eastern Michigan on Saturday.

Nate Gerwig and Kevin Warzynski also had 10 points apiece for the Golden Flashes (10-5, 4-0 Mid-American). It is only the second time in school history that Kent State has started the MAC season with four consecutive wins.

John Bowler scored 23 points and grabbed 14 rebounds and Danny McElhinny added 11 points for the Eagles (3-9, 0-4), who have lost five straight games. It was Bowler's 21st career double-double.

Trailing 51-37, Eastern Michigan scored five straight points to pull within nine with 13:47 remaining. The Golden Flashes rebuilt their lead to 14, but back-to-back 3-pointers by Carlos Medlock and McElhinny, and two free throws by Bowler, cut the deficit to 59-56 with 5:20 to play.

After the Eagles climbed within 61-60 with 3:45 left, Gerwig scored six straight points to put Kent State ahead 67-60, and the Golden Flashes held the Eagles to only one basket the rest of the game.

There were seven lead changes and one tie during the first 11 minutes of the opening half. After Eastern Michigan pulled within 23-21, Kent State took control of the game by reeling off 11 straight points.

During halftime, Eastern Michigan retired the No. 54 jersey of Kennedy McIntosh, the school's all-time leading scorer and rebounder. McIntosh played from 1967-71 and totaled 2,219 points and 1,426 rebounds.
