CINCINNATI (AP) -- Brian Thornton scored 19 points, grabbed 12
rebounds and blocked five shots, leading Xavier to a 60-55 win over
Dayton on Saturday.
Justin Cage scored 12 points for Xavier (13-4, 4-2 Atlantic 10)
including two key free throws with 16 seconds left as the
Musketeers broke a two-game losing streak. Xavier's Stanley Burrell
scored 11 points.
Brian Roberts led Dayton (10-11, 2-5) with 20 points.
Jimmy Binnie pulled the Flyers to 56-55 with 32 seconds
remaining after the Musketeers had led by 10 points with 4 minutes
remaining. Burrell then made a foul shot with 30 seconds left to
push the lead back to two.
Roberts missed a tying jumper with 20 seconds left, Cage
grabbing the rebound and then being fouled. His two free throws put
the Musketeers in control, with Dedrick Finn adding a late foul
Binnie finished with 10 points for Dayton, which shot 35.4
percent from the field (23-of-65).
Xavier, which shot 41.2 percent (21-of-51) on field goals has
won the last 21 meetings on its home court in the long rivalry.
