BOSTON (AP) -- Shawn James scored a career-high 26 points and
added 10 rebounds and 10 blocked shots as Northeastern held off
Virginia Commonwealth 79-74 on Saturday.
Northeastern (13-8, 9-4 Colonial) led by as many as 13 in the
second half, but VCU pulled within five, 76-71, on Alexander
Harper's 3-pointer with 27.9 seconds left.
But
Jose Juan Barea hit a free throw and
Bobby Kelly scored on a
layup to put the game out of reach.
B.A. Walker hit a 3-pointer at
the buzzer to account for the final score.
James was 10-of-13 from the floor and his effort was the third
triple-double of his career.
Barea had 22 points and nine assists.
The Rams (15-6, 9-4) were by
Nick George with 28 points and 13
rebounds, and Walker with 15 points.
VCU led early, but Kelly tied the score at 13-13 with a jumper
with 14:44 left in the first half. Barea hit a 3-pointer with 14:22
left to give Northeastern the lead for good.
Barea also hit a driving layup in the final seconds of the half
to give Northeastern a 37-30 halftime lead.
