FAIRFAX, Va. (AP) -- Jai Lewis scored 19 points as George Mason
took sole possession of first place in the Colonial Athletic
Association with a 69-62 win over UNC-Wilmington on Saturday.
The Patriots (17-5, 11-2 CAA), broke a first-place tie with the
Seahawks (17-7, 10-3), who lost for just the second time in their
last 10 games. It was the Patriots' 10th win in 11 games. Tony
Skinn scored 16 points and Lamar Butler added 10 for the Patriots.
With the win, George Mason coach Jim Larranaga broke former
Richmond coach Dick Tarrant's CAA record for career victories with
The Patriots opened the second half with a 7-0 spurt giving them
a 34-30 advantage. But the Seahawks responded with an 8-0 run of
their own to reclaim the lead.
Lewis scored 14 of his points in the second half to tie the game
at 43-43. But T.J. Carter responded with a 3-pointer to give
UNC-Wilmington a 46-43 advantage with 15:03 remaining, a lead the
Seahawks would hold until 3:43 on the clock.
After missing 10 of their first 17 attempts from the free throw
line, the Patriots hit 11 straight to end the game. Folarin
Campbell's foul shots with 13 seconds remaining would provide the
game's final margin as George Mason snapped a three-game losing
streak to the Seahawks.
Carter led the Seahawks with 21 points. Mitch Laue added 10
points and 10 rebounds.
