Maples Pavilion, Stanford, California
STANFORD, Calif. (AP) -- Hassan Adams broke out of a scoring slump with 23 points and Ivan Radenovic also scored 23 to help Arizona snap a four-game road losing streak with a 76-72 victory over Stanford on Sunday.Marcus Williams keyed a 16-3 run to start the second half as the Wildcats (16-10, 9-6 Pac-10) bounced back after a loss at California on Thursday to complete a season sweep against the Cardinal (13-10, 9-5) and earn a much-needed win.Arizona and Stanford have dominated the Pac-10 the past decade, but this matchup was less about conference superiority and more about boosting both teams' chances of making the NCAA tournament. Both teams have won three outright Pac-10 regular season titles and shared another with each other the past eight seasons. The only year since 1996-97 that neither the Cardinal nor the Wildcats finished atop the Pac-10 standings was in 2001-02, when they finished in a four-way tie for second, two games behind Oregon. Arizona ended up winning the conference tournament that season.Arizona trailed by two at the break but Williams scored nine of his 11 points in the run to open the second half, including an alley-oop jam from Mustafa Shakur and Arizona's first 3-pointer of the game to make it 48-39. He capped the spurt with another basket, making it 52-41.Stanford's Chris Hernandez even missed a foul shot during the run, ending his streak of 34 consecutive made from the line. The Wildcats led 66-52 with 6:19 to go before Stanford fought back behind three 3-pointers from Hernandez during a 16-5 run that cut it to three with 50.1 seconds to go.Radenovic then made one foul shot to make it a four-point game and Tim Morris missed a long jumper at the other end. Arizona put it away from the foul line.Adams scored just seven points against Cal and was averaging 13.8 points in his last 10 games after scoring 20.6 in his first 15. But he started strong with 12 in the first half and was much more aggressive than he was Thursday.Hernandez let Stanford with 28 points, Matt Haryasz added 15 and Taj Finger had 11. The Cardinal had won nine straight at Maples Pavilion.Arizona used an aggressive full-court press for much of the game, using its athleticism to cause turnovers and disrupting the Cardinal's offense. After shooting 57 percent in the first half, Stanford shot just 36 percent after the break and finished with 15 turnovers.Hernandez hit three 3-pointers in the first 2:32 of the game, forcing Arizona to come out of its zone defense. The long-range shooting -- Stanford hit four 3s in the first four minutes -- helped the Cardinal take an early 14-6 lead. But Adams led the Wildcats back, and the teams went into the break with Stanford leading 38-36.
