ROCK HILL, S.C. (AP) -- James Shuler scored 26 points and added
11 assists as Winthrop beat High Point 94-78 Thursday, to earn a
shot at the Big South title.
The win also placed Winthrop coach Gregg Marshall atop the
schools' all-time win list with 161.
"The record means that I have been very fortunate to have some
excellent players and coaches during my eight seasons here at
Winthrop," said Marshall, 42.
Marshall needs 33 more victories to become the winningest coach
in Big South history.
Shuler was a perfect 18-of-18 from the free-throw line for the
Eagles (19-7, 12-3), and Torrell Martin scored 17 for Winthrop.
Akeem Scott scored a career-high 31, including six 3-pointers in
the losing effort for High Point (14-12, 7-8).
Winthrop's win ties the team with Birmingham-Southern atop the
Big South standings. The Eagles and Panthers will play the regular
season finale Saturday to see who wins the regular season title.
That's important because the quarterfinals and finals in the
conference tournament are hosted by the higher finisher in the
