NEW YORK (AP) -- Jeff Xavier scored 23 points and Manhattan
rallied in the second half to defeat Iona 78-74 Sunday night and
win the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference title in the final
regular-season game for both teams.
Jason Wingate scored 16 points, Devon Austin had 12, and Arturo
Dubois had 11 points and 14 rebounds for the Jaspers (18-9, 14-4),
who earned a bye into the semifinals of next weekend's MAAC
In finishing in second , Iona earned a bye into the MAAC
The Gaels, who led by seven at the break, were ahead by as much
as 44-34 after Soliver scored 1:23 into the second half.
Wingate nailed two free throws to cap an 18-7 run that gave
Manhattan its first lead in the second half at 52-51 with 11:02
Soliver scored with 3:16 left to give Iona a 70-67 lead.
Dubois then scored to cut the edge to 70-69, Mike Konovelchick
tied it on a free throw with 2:31 left and Wingate's basket with
1:58 to go provided the Jaspers with a 72-70 lead.
There were 55 fouls whistled in the game that produced 11 lead
changes and five ties, with Manhattan converting 26-of-32 free
throws and Iona going 24-for-35.
