ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) -- Mike O'Donnell hit seven of his nine shots
from the floor and scored a career-high 23 points as UCF upset UTEP
with a 66-55 win Saturday night.
UTEP (19-8, 11-3 Conference USA) got within 55-45 on a lineup by
Edgar Moreno with 6:10 left, but O'Donnell put UCF back up by 13
with a 3-point bank shot with 5:05 remaining.
O'Donnell hit all six of his three-point attempts. UCF (13-14,
7-7) was 9-of-17 from three-point range.
UTEP still has some work to do in next week's Conference USA
Tournament in Memphis to make the NCAA Tournament. UTEP's RPI
ranking was 63rd coming into this week.
Josh Peppers' three-pointer with 11:12 remaining capped a 15-2
UCF run and gave UCF their biggest lead, 53-38.
Jason Williams was the only UTEP player to score during the
first 13:50 of the second half, allowing UCF to maintain its
Williams finished with 26 points and five rebounds. Brent Murphy
had 10 points for UTEP, who shot just 37 percent from the floor.
Neither team led by more than three points during the first
half. Murphy's 3-pointer put UTEP ahead 31-30 with 59 seconds
remaining, but Rose gave UCF the lead on a driving slam dunk with
24 seconds left.
