Joseph sparks Spartans' 45-34 win vs. Brown

EAST LANSING, Mich. (AP) -- Maurice Joseph scored all 12 of his points in the first half to help Michigan State beat Brown 45-34 on Wednesday night in the opening round of the 2K Sports College Hoops Classic.

After scoring just 16 points last season as a freshman, Joseph was nearly perfect in the first 20 minutes with 3-for-4 shooting from the field, a pair of 3-pointers and 4-for-4 work at the foul line.

Freshman Raymar Morgan added 10 points and six rebounds in his collegiate debut, and Goran Suton added eight points and five rebounds for the Spartans (1-0).

Drew Neitzel, the lone returning starter for Tom Izzo's team, was 1-for-8 from the field, scored just seven points and was scoreless in the first half.

Mark McAndrew had eight points to lead the Ivy League's Bears (0-1).

The Spartans led by 13 points late in the sluggish first half and were up 26-16 at the break. Michigan State shot 40 percent from the field before halftime, while Brown hit just 27.3 percent.

But the Bears cut a 12-point lead to five late in the game and missed a chance to draw within three when McAndrew missed the front end of a 1-and-1 opportunity at the line.

An 18-foot jumper by Travis Walton and six free throws allowed the Spartans to escape.

Michigan State will meet Youngstown State on Thursday night for one of the four regional titles in the 16-team event, which benefits Coaches vs. Cancer.

Brown will play Central Michigan in a consolation game Thursday.
