HOUSTON (AP) -- Rice got 24 points from Morris Almond and coasted to a 118-66 win over Paul Quinn College in the Owls' season opener on Saturday night.

It was the most points scored in Rice history. The previous high was 113 against Grambling in 2004.

Almond, who averaged 21.9 points last year, scored his 22nd point with 17:03 minutes to play Saturday, giving him 1,000 for his career.

He played sparingly the second half and went to the bench for good with 10:17 remaining.

Paul Quinn (0-2), an NAIA school, was led by Damien Chisholm, who scored 22 points. Cedric Brooks had 10.

The Owls hit 72 percent from the field for the game.

Cory Pflieger scored 17 points and Rodney Foster had 16 for Rice. Chris Hagan added 13 points, and Lorenzo Williams scored 11.

Rice hit 75 percent of its shots in the first half as the Owls led by as many as 24.
