Columbia 73, New Jersey Institute of Technology 60

NEW YORK (AP) -- John Baumann and Ben Nwachukwu scored 14 points each to lead Columbia to a 73-60 victory Friday night over the New Jersey Institute of Technology in the opening round of the Tyler Ugolyn tournament.

Columbia (2-1) will face Kennesaw State in Saturday's championship game, while NJIT will play St. Peter's in the consolation game. The tournament honors Ugolyn, a former Columbia basketball player who was killed in the World Trade Center.

Kennesaw State defeated St. Peter's 67-60 in the other first-round game.

NJIT (2-1) tied the score at 34 early in the second half, but Columbia gradually pulled away building an eight-point lead on two free throws by Nwachukwu with 7:08 to play.

Kraig Peters led the Highlanders with 16 points, and Clayton Barker had 14. Freshman Patrick Foley added 12 points for the Lions.

NJIT, in its first year competing in Division I, suffered its first loss after beating Manhattan and Rider.
