LEXINGTON, Va. (ESPN.com news services) -- Reggie Williams scored 36 points and had nine assists as VMI shattered a days-old school record for combined points in a game by beating Southern Virginia 144-127 Monday.

The two teams combined for 271 points -- the most ever in the school's history. It beat the previous mark of 251, set Nov. 15 when VMI beat Virginia Intermont 156-95.

"SVU took the fight to us and we had to really work, I thought," VMI coach Duggar Baucom told the school's Web site. "I wasn't pleased with the way we finished off that game."

The Keydets (3-2) shot 53.2 percent on an astounding 109 field goal attempts. They hit 20 of 59 3-pointers but, interestingly, hit only eight of 20 free throws to keep Southern Virginia in the game. VMI had five players, including Williams, in double digits. Chavis Holmes scored 28, Matt Murrer had 25 and Fred Robinson contributed another 20.

"Fred shot the ball a lot better tonight," Baucom said. "Hopefully that will continue. He had some open looks and he made some, so hopefully that will help his confidence."

Travis Holmes grabbed six steals and Robinson had five as the Keydets scored 61 points off turnovers. Adam Lonon scored 10 points and registered four steals.

Virginia Southern (2-5) also shot well, hitting 52.4 percent with six players in double digits. The Knights made all 23 of their free throws and went 18 of 49 from the arc. Aaron Louder scored 26, while Tanner Johnson had 25.

VMI jumped out to a 22-7 lead three and a half minutes into the game and were ahead 73-54 at halftime. Their biggest lead was 37, with 6:04 left in the game.

In VMI's win over Virginia Intermont, the team broke 24 school and individual records, including the school's most field goals, most points scored and biggest margin of victory.

VMI scored more than 100 points for the third time in five games this season. The Keydets also posted more than 100 in two exhibition games.
