WASHINGTON (AP) -- Darryl Hudson was perfect on six free throws in the final two minutes and came up with a crucial steal to help Howard hold off VMI for a 116-111 victory Saturday.
Hudson scored 21 of his 28 points in the second half and
Eugene Myatt scored a game-high 41 to help the Bison (2-3) blow past their previous single-game high of 86 points.
Reggie Williams finished with 30 points for VMI (3-4), his fourth 30-point game of the season.
Howard was able to run with VMI, which plays at a frenetic pace and defended with full-court pressure almost all game. The Keydets entered the night as the nation's highest scoring team, averaging 104.7 points per game.
The Bison seemed to relish the fast tempo and didn't try to slow down play despite committing 30 turnovers.
Howard went on an 18-2 run early in the second half to erase a 52-47 halftime deficit.
Jeron Smith's two free throws with 9:35 remaining gave the Bison an 89-71 lead.
VMI clawed back, however, with a barrage of three-pointers.
Keydets guard
Travis Holmes hit a three-pointer to tie the game at 107 with 1:52 remaining. Hudson put Howard back in front, however, by sinking two free throws.
Hudson also came up big on the defensive end, intercepting a pass from Keydets guard
Fred Robinson. He was immediately fouled and made both free throws.
