Southern Illinois 69, Virginia Tech 64

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. (AP) -- Jamal Tatum hit a 3-point basket and Matt Shaw added a pair of free throws in the final seconds to secure a 69-64 victory for Southern Illinois over Virginia Tech on Sunday in the fifth-place game of the Old Spice Classic at Disney World.

Shaw scored 17 points and Tatum had 16 to pace Southern Illinois (4-1). Randal Falker and Bryan Mullins added 13 and 11, respectively, for the Salukis.

Deron Washington led Virginia Tech (3-2) with 18 points and Zabian Dowdell finished with 16.

The Hokies trailed by a dozen early in the second half, but Dowdell scored six points during a 10-2 run midway through the period to cut the deficit to one.

A.D. Vassallo put Virginia Tech ahead for the first time on a 3-pointer with 7:10 remaining. The game was tied five times down the stretch.

Falker scored all but two of his points and blocked a pair of shots in the first half to help Southern Illinois build a 28-23 advantage at the intermission.
