AMES, Iowa (AP) -- Al Stewart scored on a driving layup with 4.4 seconds left and Drake endured a review of Iowa State's shot at the buzzer before celebrating an 80-78 victory over the Cyclones on Sunday.
Drake (3-2) blew a 16-point lead in the second half, then got the play it needed from Stewart at the end to win at Iowa State's Hilton Coliseum for the first time in 28 years and only the third time overall.Iowa State's Dodie Dunson hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer, but it was waved off by the officials. Officials then checked a television replay several times before confirming their decision and the Cyclones (6-2) had their second straight loss to a Missouri Valley Conference school.They lost at Northern Iowa 70-57 last Wednesday.Ajay Calvin led Drake with 22 points and freshman Josh Young scored a season-high 18, including 4-for-7 3-point shooting. Klayton Korver added 10 points for the Bulldogs, who led 62-46 with 11 1/2 minutes left.Freshman Wesley Johnson had 16 points and 10 rebounds for Iowa State. Dunson also scored 16, while Rahshon Clark added 13, Mike Taylor 12 and Corey McIntosh 10.Taylor, the team's leading scorer with a 17-point average, suffered through a second straight poor shooting game. He missed 11 of 15 shots and is just 5-for-24 in the last two games.Drake's last victory at Iowa State had been an 86-77 win in 1978. The Bulldogs had lost 13 straight on Iowa State's floor before Sunday.Calvin scored 11 of Drake's 13 points during a 2 1/2-minute stretch in which the Bulldogs went up by 16.Iowa State then began chipping away. Dunson hit two 3-pointers and Taylor made one to cut the lead to eight. Drake got the lead back to 10, then missed some quick shots and the Cyclones kept clawing back.After Johnson's deflection led to a steal, Clark hit a 3 from the left wing to cut the lead to 76-74. Stewart and Calvin both missed the front end of 1-and-1 free throw opportunities that might have secured the victory, and Dunson scored on a drive to tie it at 78 with 14 seconds remaining.Stewart got another chance and took advantage, driving in from the right side to hit the game-winner.
