ROCK HILL, S.C. (AP) -- Phillip Williams led five players in double figures with a game-high 17 points as Winthrop downed Mount St. Mary's 74-59 on Monday night.
Winthrop (8-3) took control of the game early by outscoring Mount St. Mary's 17-2 in the opening 5:17 of the game. Williams gave the Eagles an 18-point lead, the night's largest, with a jumper that put Winthrop up 25-7 with 6:58 left in the first half.
But Mount St. Mary's (2-8) cut the deficit to just six points at 30-24 with four seconds to halftime after two free throws by Guyvans Richards. Gaynor gave the Eagles a 33-24 halftime lead with a running 40-footer just before the buzzer.
The Eagles quickly took control in the second half by outscoring The Mount 10-5 in the first 3:16 of the period. Winthrop took another 18-point lead at 52-34 at 13:26.
Winthrop had its strongest shooting performance of the season on 24-42 goals for 57.1 percent. The Eagles scored seven of 19 3-point attempts for 36.8 percent.
