LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Aaron Nixon's 35-foot, 3-point shot at the buzzer lifted Long Beach State to a 66-65 victory over Loyola Marymount on Friday.
Nixon's game-winner came after Loyola Marymount had taken a 65-63 lead on Derick Grubb's basket with 2.8 seconds remaining in the game. After the first inbound pass was knocked out, Nixon sent the ball in at half court to Kejuan Johnson who immediately gave it back. The long-range shot propelled the 49ers to their fifth straight win.
Nixon, Long Beach State's leading scorer with 16.7 points per game, made only one of 12 shots before the winning basket.
Loyola Marymount (8-6) lost their first home game of the season. They had rallied back from an 11-point deficit despite losing their second-leading scorer, Matthew Knight, to a knee injury midway through the second half.
Knight is expected to miss a month with the strain. In a game Tuesday against Boise State, the team lost its leading scorer, Brandon Worthy, to a season-ending knee injury.
