PHILADELPHIA (AP) -- Herb Courtney scored 14 points and Delaware
withstood a frenetic rally by La Salle in a 58-56 victory over the
Explorers in the La Salle Invitational on Friday.
Darrell Johnson added 12 points and Brian Johnson had 11 for the
Blue Hens (2-9), who won their second straight game and posted
their first victory in 10 career meetings in Philadelphia. Delaware
was also 2-19 lifetime against the Explorers entering the game.Darnell Harris scored 12 of his 14 points in the second half for
La Salle (6-5), which dropped its third consecutive game.Delaware led 55-46 with 2:59 remaining before La Salle responded
with an 8-0 run -- two 3-pointers by Harris and a basket by Mike St.
John -- to cut the deficit to one point, 55-54.Darrell Johnson hit one of two free throws to give the Blue Hens
a 58-56 lead with 9.3 seconds left. La Salle had one last
possession, but Ruben Guillandeaux missed a runner as time expired.In the first half, Delaware built a 17-point lead, 35-18, on a
3-pointer by Sam McMahon with 3:50 left before cruising to a 37-25
advantage at halftime. The Blue Hens shot 55 percent from the field
(11 of 20) and converted six of 11 3-pointers.
