EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) -- Brian Laing and Eugene Harvey scored 21 points each and Seton Hall recovered after blowing an 18-point lead to hold off Rutgers 77-72 Wednesday night in the Big East opener for both teams.
Harvey fueled a late run that helped the Pirates (9-4) pull away in the final minutes. He also sank two free throws with 4.3 seconds left and Seton Hall leading 75-72.
J.R. Inman led Rutgers (7-7) with 18 points and Anthony Farmer added 17.
The game marked the Big East debuts of Seton Hall's Bobby Gonzalez and Rutgers' Fred Hill, both of whom were hired last spring. Gonzalez left Manhattan to replace Louis Orr, who was fired in March, and Hill, a longtime assistant who had been at Rutgers for one season, took over when Gary Waters was bought out of the remaining four years of his contract.
