GREENVILLE, N.C. (AP) -- Morris Almond had a double-double with a
team-best 18 points and 10 rebounds to lead Rice past East Carolina
64-47 on Saturday.
Almond made five 3-pointers for Rice (8-7, 2-0 Conference USA),
which led by as many as 25.
Lorenzo Williams scored 17 points and
Patrick Britton finished with 10.
Courtney Captain scored 18 points to lead the Pirates (5-10,
0-2), and freshman
John Fields grabbed 13 rebounds.
Greg Killings scored on a lay-up to start a 10-0 spurt that
snapped a 10-10 tie and gave the Owls a 20-10 lead midway through
the first half.
Rice pushed the lead to 16 and made it 32-16 at the break.
Chris Hagan scored on a lay-up to extend the lead to 21, 39-18,
early in the second half.
Captain hit a pair of 3-pointers and
Darrell Jenkins added one
of his own on the Pirates next three possessions to cut the Rice
lead to 14, 41-27, with 15:49 remaining.
Rice extended its lead to 25, 64-39, with an 18-7 run to help
secure the win.
