Mason netted 14 of his points in the second half as South Carolina State (6-10, 4-2 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference) picked up its third straight win. The loss was Bethune-Cookman's (3-12, 1-5) 11th in the past 12 games.
The Bulldogs finished the first half with an 11-point lead, but Jimmy Hudson and Josh Cummings led the Wildcats on a game-tying rally in the second half. Cummings' basket and ensuing foul shot with 5:38 left on the clock tied the game at 51.
Mason, Jones and Julius Carter then hit a combined 13 of 14 free-throw opportunities to seal the win for the Bulldogs.
Carter and Jason Flagler each ended the night with 10 points for South Carolina State.
Hudson and Cummings also scored 10 points for the Wildcats.
