Cent. Connecticut St. 61, Long Island 48

NEW BRITAIN, Conn. (AP) -- Obie Nwadike had 18 points and 17 rebounds while Javier Mojica topped the 1,000-point level as Central Connecticut beat Long Island 61-48 Monday.

Central (7-10, 4-1 NEC) opened up a nine-point lead in the first half with a 7-0 run midway through the period. The spurt was highlighted by a 3-pointer by Mojica.

Another jumper by Mojica gave the Devils a 21-12 lead at the 8:52 to go in the half.

In the first half, Central led despite committing eight turnovers. The Blackbirds hit just 24 percent of their shots in the opening 20 minutes.

An 8-0 run increased the Blue Devils lead to 43-23 early in the half, and was keyed by senior center Jemino Sobers (10 points, eight rebounds, seven blocks). He dunked, then blocked a shot at the other end and finished the subsequent fast break with a layup to cap the charge.

LIU closed to within 11 twice, but Central pulled away again late on two dunks by Sobers and one by Ingo Beaudet.

Eugene Kotorovai led the Blackbirds with 14 points. Nwadike now has 999 points for his career.
