JACKSON, Miss. (AP) -- Trey Johnson scored 18 points, including four free throws in the final 34 seconds, and Jackson State fought off a late rally to beat Mississippi Valley State 66-60 on Saturday.
Jackson State (12-9, 6-2 Southwestern Athletic Conference) was ahead 47-30 with 8:45 left in the game before Valley scored 10 straight and pulled within 47-40 on a 3-pointer from Stanford Speech.
Johnson, who was held to only six points in the first half, led a Jackson State surge with four points that pushed the lead back to 56-42 with 5:23 remaining.
Mississippi Valley (8-12, 5-3) outscored Jackson State 12-2 to get within 58-54 with 2:11 left in the game before missing several shots in the final minute.
Julius Young added 12 points for Jackson State, which shot 42 percent from the floor.
Jeffery Price led Mississippi Valley with 16 points, Richard Cannon tacked on 11 and Speech had 10.
Mississippi Valley managed to sink only 31 percent of its shots.
