HAMDEN, Conn. (AP) -- Victor Akinyanju hit a layup with 26.2 seconds left in overtime as Quinnipiac beat Long Island 73-71 Saturday in the first game played at the new $52 million TD Banknorth Sports Center.
Akinyanju finished with 14 points and hit the winning basket on a feed from
Adam Gonzalez, who scored 21 points for the Bobcats (8-10, 6-3 Northeast Conference).
Long Island (7-13, 3-6) had a chance to win the game, but Jay Wisseh's 3-pointer was off the mark. Wisseh got the rebound on his shot, but missed a 10-footer that would have tied the game with 10 seconds left.
DeMario Anderson added 18 points for Quinnipiac, which won its sixth-straight game to match its longest winning streak since the 2002-2003 season.
The Bobcats led by as many as 14 points in the first half before Long Island rallied to force overtime.
James Williams scored 21 points to lead the Blackbirds, who lost their fourth-straight game.
The Bobcats showed no signs of nerves in the early going as they made seven of their first nine shots and took their first double-digit lead at 17-6 when Akinyanju made a free throw with 13:46 left.
Quinnipiac shot 56.7 percent in the first 20 minutes and led 40-30 at halftime.
