MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (AP) -- Joe Alexander scored a career-high 23 points including six straight in a key stretch late in the game to lead West Virginia to a 64-52 win over DePaul on Sunday.

Alexander followed a shot clock-beating 3-pointer with a three-point play to extend WVUs lead to 61-48 with 1:30 left. That sealed a grinding game in which neither team scored any more than six consecutive points despite West Virginia (16-4, 5-3 Big East) leading throughout.

Alex Ruoff added 12 points and seven assists for the Mountaineers, helping WVU advance to 11-0 at home this season. DePaul (12-10, 3-5) held West Virginia to just one field goal -- by Alexander -in the first 11 minutes of the second half, after WVU had surged to a 37-26 halftime lead on the strength of six three-pointers and 10 turnovers.

DePaul was led by Wilson Chandler and Sammy Meija, who scored 11 and 10 points, respectively. The Demons stayed in the game by matching West Virginias eight threes with 30 points in the paint. But 11 total turnovers clinched the contest.

West Virginia plays its next two games on the road before facing ninth-ranked Pitt and No. 3 UCLA.
