Richardson nails 3 to help Nebraska shock Texas Tech

    Associated Press

LUBBOCK, Texas -- Charles Richardson hit a 3-pointer as time expired to lead Nebraska to a 61-59 victory over Texas Tech on Tuesday night.

Nebraska inbounded the ball at its end of the court with 18 seconds remaining and got it to Marcus Perry on the left side. His 3-point attempt missed, but Aleks Maric tipped the rebound out to the right side and Tech's Charles Burgess saved the ball from going out of bounds.

Richardson grabbed it and put it up from behind the arc to clinch the win for the Cornhuskers (14-8, 3-5 Big 12).

The loss for Tech extended its losing streak to four games after the Red Raiders (15-9, 4-5) got back-to-back upsets of top 10 teams Kansas and Texas A&M.

Richardson scored 15 points and Perry got 13 to lead Nebraska, which ended the game on a 21-8 run.

Martin Zeno scored 18 points and Jon Plefka added 15 for Tech.

The Red Raiders appeared to have the game in hand after halftime but twice let the Cornhuskers back in. The second time Nebraska used a 13-2 run, including three 3-pointers by Perry to tie it at 53 with less than three minutes remaining.

The Cornhuskers went ahead 58-57 with 1:28 left when Richardson hit three free throws after being fouled by Jay Jackson on a 3-point attempt. Zeno followed up with two free throws after getting fouled by Richardson to give Tech a 59-58 lead with 1:11 left.

Perry missed on Nebraska's next possession and Jackson didn't even catch rim for Tech as the shot clock expired and Nebraska brought the ball up for its winning possession.

The first half was filled with sloppy play. Both teams shot poorly and neither could hold on to the ball. Tech missed its first eight shots and turned the ball over four times in the first 7:32 of the game. The Cornhuskers hit on only 3-of-10 from the field and also had four turnovers in the first 8:57.

The Red Raiders got their first score on a 3-pointer by Alan Voskuil to pull within 5-3 with 12:28 remaining in the half. Nebraska went up 14-8 on a 3 by Paul Velander but that's when Tech began to click, hitting 7 of 11 field goals to go up 29-16 at halftime.

It was the lowest first-half point total for a Tech opponent this season. The Red Raiders held Arkansas to 22 first-half points in December.
