HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. (AP) -- Frank Elegar scored 26 points, including six in overtime, leading Drexel to a 95-87 victory over Hofstra on Thursday night.
Dominick Mejia added 25 points and Bashir Mason had 14 points for the Dragons (18-6, 10-4 Colonial Athletic Association), who snapped Hofstra's 28-game, regular-season home winning streak. Drexel has won six of its last eight games overall.Loren Stokes, who scored his 2,000th career point with the game's first basket, had 29 points and grabbed nine rebounds for the Pride (18-7, 11-3). Antoine Agudio added 19 points and Carlos Rivera added 14 points before fouling out.It was the third time in the last four meetings that the teams played into overtime.With the scored tied 78-78 at the end of regulation, Drexel scored the first five points in overtime. A free throw by Chaz Crawford gave the Dragons the lead for good and then Elegar made consecutive jumpers for an 83-78 advantage.Hofstra crept to 85-83 on a jumper by Agudio with 1:11 left in the extra period, but Drexel converted 10 of 12 free throws to snap a four-game losing streak against its conference rival.Mejia's basket with 1.6 seconds left in regulation sent the game into overtime. Drexel had trailed 62-51 with 10:47 left, but the Dragons closed out regulation with a 27-16 run. Mason led the comeback with nine points before fouling out with 5:49 left and Drexel trailing 68-65.Stokes became the fifth Hofstra player to score more than 2,000 points. He moved ahead of Atlanta Hawks' guard Speedy Claxton into fourth place on Hofstra's career scoring list with 2,028 points. It was the senior guard's ninth straight 20-plus point performance.
