KALAMAZOO, Mich. (AP) -- Derek Drews matched a career-high 17 points and Western Michigan hit a season-best 12 3-pointers in a 79-57 win over Kent State on Sunday.

Drews, a sophomore making his debut at power forward, knocked in five of those long-range shots for the Broncos (11-13, 6-5 Mid-American).

Kent State (15-9, 8-3), which had won six straight entering the game, lost an opportunity to catch Akron in the MAC's East Division. The Golden Flashes, led by Julian Sullinger's 12 points, made just 3-of-17 3-point attempts.

Shawntes Gary added 15 points for the Broncos and Joe Reitz pulled down 12 rebounds to go along with 10 points. Western Michigan turned the ball over just nine times, its second-lowest total of the season.

The Broncos forced 15 Kent State turnovers.
