BOWLING GREEN, Ky. (AP) -- Carlos Monroe scored 28 points and made two free throws with 3.4 seconds to play as Florida Atlantic upset Western Kentucky 78-73 Wednesday night.
DeAndre Rice's running 10-foot bank shot put Florida Atlantic (13-13, 8-7 Sun Belt Conference) ahead for good at 75-73 with 34 seconds remaining.
Western Kentucky (18-10, 10-6) had three chances to tie the game in the final 22 seconds but turned the ball over each time, once on an offensive foul by Courtney Lee under the basket, later on a drive in the lane by Lee and then on an errant pass with six seconds to play.
The Owls were 30-of-50 (60 percent) from the field. Monroe, who scored 16 of the Owls first 21 points in the game, finished 11-of-13 from the field and 6-of-10 at the free-throw line. He also had 12 rebounds.
Paul Graham finished with 15 points for the Owls, while Jeff Parmer had 14 and Rice added 13.
Western Kentucky got 49 of its 73 points off the bench, compared with just two for Florida Atlantic. Orlando Mendez-Valdez came off the Hilltoppers' bench to score 21 points in just 22 minutes of action. Lee finished with 15 points for Western, while Boris Siakam added 11.
